We woke this morning to what will hopefully be the only cloudy day this week. Making an earlyish start to avoid afternoon chop in Icy Strait, we pulled anchor around 7:30. It was a zero tide when we left Couverden Island Cove, so we followed the GPS path we arrived on to avoid risking uncharted rocks in this bay full of unexpected shoals and shallows. The trip to Sawmill Bay was uneventful, and honestly not very scenic with the gray weather and low clouds covering the mountaintops.

We saw some porpoises when we were heading up Excursion Inlet, but they weren’t interested in us. We also dropped our shrimp pot on the way in, so tomorrow we will pick it up on the way out. Fingers crossed!
Sawmill Bay is a pretty, quiet spot at the top of west arm of Excursion Inlet. We are the only ones here, and when the clouds lifted this evening, we could see the snow-clad peaks surrounding the bay. We are actually inside Glacier Bay National Park here, though it is not part of the area you need a permit for. With everything so quiet here and with a grassy little estuary area at the head of the bay, we had hoped to see some bears or other wildlife, but so far the animals have kept to themselves.

Ryan had a nap this afternoon while I read up on Glacier Bay anchorages and planned a tentative itinerary for the week. We also rode (not rowed) out in the dinghy to look for wildlife, but just got scenery. Utilizing the extra energy from his napping, Ryan made a delicious ravioli dinner with homemade caesar salad this evening. Yum! After eating a meal like that with a couple glasses of wine in a beautiful, remote setting - well, it’s hard to think how life could get much better.
It will be early to bed tonight, so we can get up with the sun and get to Glacier Bay with enough time to collect the latest rules for the park and check out the visitor center before finding an anchorage further in. It’s unlikely Glacier Bay will have cell coverage, so there won’t be any more posts until we leave again in seven days. I’m really looking forward to returning to the Starlink coverage area so I can be consistent with my blog entries again.
