Day 73: Baranof Warm Springs

Laurel

With windy weather coming in from the Gulf of Alaska and Chatham Strait open to the ocean, we decided to stay put in Baranof Warm Springs today. We started the day by taking advantage of the public bathhouse, where one can bathe in a private spring-fed tub overlooking the harbor.

Compared to showers in our tiny little boat bathroom, washing up in this giant tub was the height of luxury.

The bad weather coming off the gulf brought rain and wind to BWS, so we spent a lot of time today inside just hanging out in Wild North and visiting with fellow sheltering boaters on the dock. In the afternoon, the rain eased up for a few hours, and we were able to go for a walk. With the tide low, we could walk right up to the base of the big waterfall coming from Baranof Lake and look back at the boat dock.

Earlier we had noticed that the local blueberries were ripe and plentiful, so I brought a bag on the walk to pick a few for tonight’s dessert. Originally, I had wanted to just get a few handfuls to sprinkle on ice cream; but once we got started, we had trouble stopping. Brian kindly gave me an apple and offered me the use of his oven, so I made blueberry-apple crumble with the bountiful harvest. It was delicious!

In case you’re wondering how we make our whipped cream on the boat

Hoping for better weather tomorrow. Baranof Warm Springs is clearly not a bad place to hunker down, but I’m starting to get antsy about all the people. I’ve gotten used to quiet and solitude this trip. When one of the other boats started playing mariachi music loudly on the dock this evening, I knew it was time to return to the wilderness.
