We enjoyed our time in Wrangell and Petersburg, but we’re excited now to head off into less traveled corners of the coastline.

Since we plan to be away from fuel docks for at least a week, we wanted to top up before we left and also to fill one of our reserve fuel bladders. We have two 50-gallon bladders that fit into the deck lockers in back. Having the ability to carry extra fuel provides flexibility and safety - we don’t have to waste time coming back to town to fill up fuel tanks, aren’t concerned if we get held up by weather or find an unexpected nook to explore, and can burn a little extra planing, if we need or want to.

Today’s trip was long, wet, and lumpy. We crossed the widest part of Frederick Sound, and it had wavy swells that made us slop around in slow-boat mode. Oh well. Some days are just going to be like that. Luckily, both of us have our sea legs and no one was sick. And rainy, misty days have their own charm.

When we got to Pybus Bay, we were greeted by the sight of 50-100 otters, rafting together in a kelp bed near the bay entrance. We didn’t want to freak them out too much, so we didn’t get close enough for great pictures, but I got a few fair ones.

Sadly, there were already three other pleasure boats anchored in Cannery Cove when we arrived, but as the summer progresses we’re probably going to have to get used to sharing again. The clouds were covering the mountaintops when we arrived, so I’ll post anchorage pictures in tomorrow’s post.
Pybus Point Lodge is on Cannery Cove, and we’ve made reservations there for dinner tomorrow night. It’s Ryan’s birthday-week this week, so we’re going to squeeze in as much fun as possible!
