Whew, what a wet and windy night! The dinghy was full of water this morning and had to be emptied before we could move it. Thankfully, the foul weather finished in the night, and this morning dawned with a few breaks in the clouds that eventually became full sun and blue skies.

I was a little slow getting up, because I knew we weren’t going to a new anchorage, but Ryan worked on modifying the shrimp pot to better adhere to Alaska regulations and got the gear ready for a trip out to Frederick Sound to go fishing. We dropped the shrimp pot on the way out of Pybus Bay, to test the new pot configuration. Also, in Petersburg we had bought some cat food (Friskies Whitefish and Tuna reportedly will tempt any self-respecting shrimp) to try in the trap, so hopes were high. The otters are prolific around Pybus Bay, so I managed to get a picture of this cutie.

Frederick Sounds was calm, with a minor roll and only the occasional rocking from the wakes of boats passing in the distance. Several huge cruise ships passed by, presumably on the way to see the glaciers in the Tracy and Endicott Arms.

Without any local knowledge or experience, it’s hard to find a great fishing hole with a morning’s exploration; so, no halibut, but we caught a couple cod that we will throw into the curry pot in the coming days. Finally supplementing our stores!
After tiring of fishing, we came back and found a cozy little afternoon anchorage in Donkey Bay, in a corner marked Sheldon Cove on the Navionics map. It’s slightly less spectacular than Cannery Cove, but there is no development and no other boats moored here, so it’s a hard call to choose between them. We took the dinghy down and explored the coastline here, seeing how far we could get at low tide around the islets and exposed rocks. We saw lots of flounder scooting around the muddy bottom as our little boat passed over.

After gunkholing around the bay, we had some fizzy water with the glacier ice from yesterday. So refreshing!

We went back and pulled up our shrimp pot before dinner and got…one shrimp. Honestly, it’s slow going catching one shrimp at a time. I’m starting to get a complex. We threw the shrimp pot back next to some local pots, and added one of the cod heads and guts from our catch this morning.
Dinner at Pybus Point Lodge was delightful. We were made to feel very welcome and sat at dinner with a group of plumbers from Utah. After dinner, we did some bear-viewing from the deck telescope at the lodge, then as the sun was setting, we took the boat and dropped anchor in the same spot in Cannery Cove, so we didn’t have to go far and had a track to follow. It was a beautiful evening.
