Day 39: Snug Cove to Sandman Bight

Laurel

Updated: Jun 17, 2022

We left Snug Cove early to try to avoid the worst of the opposing currents in Stephens Passage. I think we were there less than 12 hours. Ryan was feeling under the weather today, so I did most of the driving and didn’t have an opportunity to take many pictures. We saw three whales while crossing Frederick Sound on the way to Kake, which was nice. Two of them were fairly close to the boat, the closest so far. They’re so big!

It was gray, but calm, crossing Frederick Sound

We stopped in Kake to top up the fuel and check it out. There is just the one fuel station in town that serves both cars and boats. They lost their actual fuel dock a few years back in a storm, so until they put a new one in they just drive a truck with a fuel tank, pump, and meter on the back over to the public dock and fuel you up from that. It’s pretty informal - when we were boating past, looking for the fuel dock shown on our GPS map, a couple guys yelled down to us to go to the dock next door. When we got there, they pulled up with their fuel truck and had the gas pumping in no time. It wasn’t a cheap provisioning stop, but everyone was kind and helpful.

After that, we just cruised an hour across to Sandman Bight. The approach was a little bit daunting, through lots of reefs and islets, and as I’ve mentioned before, we’ve found the sounding data on our charts to be more indicative than accurate for Southeast Alaska. Luckily, we didn’t run aground or ding the prop, and the anchorage itself is delightful - private and sheltered with room for just one, surrounded by cliffy islands and a sandy beach.
