Day 42: Red Bluff Bay to Takatz Bay

Laurel

Today did not go at all as planned. Instead of leaving early this morning, we had some unexpected boat stuff to deal with and didn’t get out until nearly noon. No big deal, the sun was shining and the current in Chatham Strait had turned north and would be helping us, so perhaps it was for the best - but no. We got out to the mouth of Red Bluff Bay and there were whitecaps everywhere. The wind from the north was clashing with the current from the south and making a terrible mess to boat in. After battling 4-6 foot waves for maybe 15 minutes, we turned around and spent the afternoon in outer Red Bluff Bay, waiting for an evening lull in the wind. We had an early dinner, then tried Chatham Strait again to find it lovely and calm. The vagaries of the weather!

Baranof Island is amazingly beautiful

We didn’t get anchored in Takatz until 9:00 PM, so didn’t have the time or energy to explore there. It looks gorgeous, with waterfall pouring from a mountain basin hanging above the bay and an estuary area begging to be explored. If we had time we’d have stayed another night, but we’ve got some housekeeping to do in Juneau before we fly to Anchorage. Perhaps we can stop here later in the summer, on our way south, and give it the attention it deserves.
