Days 45-46: Juneau

Laurel

There’s not much to tell you about the two days we spent in Juneau. Lots of chores, rain, and watching the world go by on the docks. We’ve met in person a couple people that Ryan ”met” on the internet while preparing for this trip, which was a kick. One of the funnest things I saw was a group of boys fishing and crabbing off the dock. When we walked past this evening one of them was exclaiming about the weight of his little crabtrap, so we stopped and watched him pull up a king crab! The boys’ honest excitement was a delight, and who doesn’t like to see a big ol’ king crab.

Lots of whalewatching boats take tours out of this port, but this evening the whales came to us and Ryan watched a humpback feeding just outside the breakwater. Now the rain is back and we’re hunkering down. The neighboring fishing boat hasn’t started their generator yet this evening, which randomly revs every 9 to 14 seconds (I’ve counted) , but that’s always good for a groan and an eyeroll.

I’ve got a sim with a cellular data plan now for my iPad, so I can post without wifi or satellite internet. Our phones have T-Mobile wireless, which doesn’t have a presence in Alaska, and we discovered recently that T-Mobile limits how much data you can use here before they throttle you. (Ok, they throttle your data speed, but I feel throttled - you can’t do much with 200 MB.) With this sim I’ve been able to upload my blogs from the last few days’ travels, and I’ll be all caught up when I publish this one this evening.

Tomorrow we fly to Anchorage for a week, and I will not be posting during this time. When we get back, though, it will be full speed ahead, with our next target being Glacier Bay.

Can you ask Ryan if he was by any chance a NZ Fisherman back in the 80s, and perhaps he visited a restaurant/bar in WA state called Garcia's of Scottsdale? Brian
