Days 69-70: Kanga Bay and Sitka

Laurel

Updated: Jul 16, 2022

We had a fun visit with Mike. We took advantage of staying in one place for a while and devoted quite a few hours this week to fishing. By day three we had caught a few fish, but no big hauls. It’s hard when you’re unfamiliar with the fishing grounds.

We were focused on fishing, but the scenery still impressed. Mt. Edgecumbe looked very volcanic, rising from the sea floor in that classic conic shape.

The many islands around Sitka Sound added some scenic interest, while also providing habitat for all the marine life. All in all, it was a great place to spend a few days fishing, boating, and hanging out.

This morning Mike rowed all his stuff from the cabin. Luckily, the tide was not as far out today as it was yesterday morning, when the dinghy was left high and dry!

The Alaska tidal swings can leave your boat stranded.

Now we’re back in Sitka. Mike has left for the airport, and Ryan and I are preparing the boat again for wilderness exploration and heading south.
