Our last day. We got up before dawn (again) in the hopes of getting calmer water on our Strait of Juan de Fuca crossing. Mount Baker was glowing as we left Friday Harbor.
We had mixed feelings heading home: being on land again would be nice, but this trip was everything we had dreamed of and more, so it was sad to see it end. Like ripping off a band-aid, we chose to plane the last 75 miles of our 4500 mile trip and get this transition day over with quickly. Juan de Fuca was calm for the first half of the crossing, but the wind picked up halfway across when the sun got higher. We could see fog rolling in from the west, so it was just as well we left early.
Once we got past Port Townsend, the protected waters made the remaining trip smooth cruising. We pulled into Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island mid-morning, and now there’s only a few days of unpacking and clean up left.
