Day 2: Friday Harbor to Butchart Cove

Laurel

Updated: May 9, 2022

After a quiet night anchored in Friday Harbor, Ryan and I had boat capuccinos (thank you, Miss Silvia!) and headed north. Actually, first we fueled up and emptied the poo tanks, but we were on the “road” by 8:30 AM. We heard warnings on the VHF radio for gale force winds in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but the crossing into Canada was mirror calm for us. Clearing customs in Sidney involved waiting on hold for 30 minutes on a phone at the Customs Dock, but once we got through to an agent everything was quick and easy.

Thankfully, it wasn’t raining while I waited for a Canadian customs agent to clear us by phone.

After stocking up on fresh vegetables, beer, and wine in Sidney, we proceeded to Butchart Cove, at the back of Butchart Gardens. We tied up at one of their mooring buoys, but the weather had become awful and windy, so we are going to save our trip through the gardens for tomorrow morning - a Mother’s Day treat for me. We just napped through the worst of the blustering and had a little putt around in the dinghy after dinner once the wind died down.

Dinner was gochujang pork with rice and stir-fried vegetables.

The Butchart Gardens Wharf across from our mooring, where you can enter through the VIP (haha) boater’s gate.
