Day 62: North Sandy Cove to Bartlett Cove

Laurel

Today was our last full day in Glacier Bay. We got up this morning a little more slowly, since we weren’t going very far. We did some planing to give the motors a workout.

The first low clouds we have seen in Glacier Bay

On the way back we saw our first orca since British Columbia. It scooted off almost as soon as we saw it, but it was still nice to see.

Why don’t those birds seem more concerned about the orca? Their little legs must dangle temptingly, like tasty orca treats.

As we approached Bartlett Cove, the waters were crawling with humpbacks. At times we didn’t know where to go - we’re supposed to stay 1 nm from the coast (where whales here hang out) and 1/4 mile away from the whales themselves, but they were so thick in the water that we couldn’t satisfy all of the requirements at many points. Anyway, we eventually made it to Bartlett Cove and did our chores - fuel, water, laundry, internet. We were surprised to discover fuel here is cheaper than at Elfin Cove (not cheap, just cheaper), so we went ahead and filled up this afternoon.

The fine weather appears to be coming to an end. We woke this morning to a few clouds loitering around the mountaintops, and by evening it was almost completely overcast. The forecast is for rain in the coming week. We feel fortunate to have experienced Glacier Bay with all the sunshine that we did.
