Day 16: Kynoch Inlet to Khutze Inlet

Laurel

We were delighted to wake again to clear blue skies. With a relatively long 55 mile run planned for today (7 hours at our slow-boat speed of 8 mph), we left Kynoch Inlet at 6:30 this morning. It was a fairly uneventful trip. We didn’t see any marine mammals or many other boats, but the scenery continued to impress.

Approaching Mathieson Narrows

We did run across some interesting human activity in Sheep Passage. On the north side we saw some really fancy-looking fish farm pens, and on the south side of the passage we saw some heli-logging activity.

Khutze Inlet has proved to be another delightful anchorage.

It’s got the Khutze River Estuary at the head of the bay, which is full of animals. Apparently this is a good spot for bear viewing. We took the dinghy down and headed over to the river to see how far up we could get and what we could see.

As far as we could get up the Khutze River

We didn’t get too far up the first time, since the tide had only turned an hour or so earlier, but closer to the high tide we had a good run. The first animals we saw were the harbor seals. They were all over, heads popping up to watch us boat past. While we were waiting for the tide come up, we saw a log in the bay with a whole line of them.

A line of harbor seals sunning themselves on a log. The big fat bull seal is on the left with his harem.

As the tide rose, there was room for fewer and fewer seals.

Not much room left!

All alone now!

Going up the river was a cool new experience, and we saw lots of birds and seals, but no bears.

We did see some claw marks on the bank where a bear must have climbed out of the river.

After the wildlife viewing, it was time for happy hour and dinner.

Now we’re just doing our online business before bed. Ryan is streaming the latest Star Trek episode on the Starlink internet connection. Amazing.
