Day 96: Millbrook Cove to Waddington Bay

Laurel

Today was a long, busy day. We got up before the sun and left our anchorage shortly after 6 AM. Winds were light, but the ocean swells going around the Cape were still a few feet high and a little confused. We were able to plane, but it was not comfortable. The fog hanging over the coast also made things a little difficult, and definitely less scenic. Here’s a short video of us going around Cape Caution.

The rollers actually got bigger once we came into Queen Charlotte Strait. At one point we came over a particularly high wave and then buried the bow in an oncoming roller as we came down - that was freaky! The moment before we popped back up felt like an eternity.

Once we got through Gordon Channel, the rollers subsided and it was smooth cruising; however, that’s when the fog became pea soup. Thank goodness for radar!

We got to Port McNeill late morning, and hurried through our chores and reprovisioning. Back on the water by lunch time, we dodged other boats in the fog on our way to meeting up with friends Scott and Laurie from Bainbridge Island in Waddington Bay. Finally, about an hour out from our anchorage, we emerged from the fog into a beautiful, sunny world of islands and mountains.

All the little rocky islets were covered with seagulls as we approached Bonwick Island

We arrived at Waddington Bay and found Scott and Laurie already at anchor with a stern tie to shore and fenders out for us to raft to them. After lashing our boats together, we quickly got happy hour going and caught up on our respective adventures.

Wild North looks so tiny next to our friends’ boat!

The StarLink satellite dish is good for more than just internet—it also doubles as a side table!

The sunniest spot was on the bow.

Laurie made some delicious crab cakes to have before dinner with crab they had caught earlier, and for dinner Ryan and I whipped up halibut tacos with some of our Glacier Bay halibut. We’re regular hunter-gatherers! We will spend the next few days in the Broughtons with the Scott and Laurie before continuing south.
